SEO or Search Engine Optimization is key to the success of your blog. Get it right and you will see floods of free traffic coming to your site from the search engines. Get it wrong and your blog could be dead in the water before you even start.
There are certain things that the bots are looking for when they are crawling your site. They need to know immediately what your blog is about. Also they need to be able to navigate around your site and from page to page easily. If they can do this then they will give you good credit within the search engines.
A good position within Google, Yahoo and Bing can send you lots of lovely free, targeted traffic.
These are the 5 things that you must do to increase your chances of a good ranking.
Keyword Research: Once you know your niche the next job is to define your main keyword. You are looking for a main keyword that describes your niche well, that has good search volume but has low to medium competition. If you get this right then half the battle is done. When you decide on your main keyword, look for 5-10 Lsi (Leyton Symantic indexing) keywords. These long tail keywords will be what Google determines are valid and connected to your main keyword.
Your Blog URL: Now you have your main keyword, this keyword needs to be in your blog URL. Or at least feature in your URL. Lets just say your keyword is „puppy training“ your blog URL would need to contain the keyword „puppy training“ in some form.
Your Blog Title: Again your keyword needs to be in your blog title. This way when the bots and people search for a keyword and your site comes up with that keyword in the URL and in the title they will know straight away what your blog topic is.
Blog Categories: We talked earlier about long tail keywords (Lsi). Ideally these 5-10 keywords should make up your category titles. When the search engines look at your site they will see your main keyword but also keywords that they associate with your main keyword. Therefore giving you better recognition in the serps.
Internal Linking: Internal linking is a key part to your on page SEO. This means that all your posts and pages should connect to each other. When you write a post put a link in it to a previous post. Another good tip is to have a list of links to relevant posts under each post. This not only gives your reader more choice, it also links all your posts together making navigation easier.
The same goes for your pages, you can link to them from your home page, but then link the pages to each other as well.
When first creating your blog, it is fairly easy to get your on page SEO correct, it is however a bit harder once your blog is up and running. Follow these tips and your blog will rank quite easily in the search engines.
